MISSION SUMMARY

Mission launch is scheduled for July/August 2020. Spacecraft design is based on Mars Science Laboratory mission architecture, including its rover and landing system.
Mars 2020 rover mission is to seek signs of habitable conditions in the ancient past and search for signs of past microbial life itself. Mars 2020 rover includes a drill to collect core samples of rocks and soils. The mission will demonstrate technologies related to future human expeditions, which include testing a method for producing oxygen from the atmosphere, identify resources such as subsurface water, improving landing techniques, and characterizing weather, dust, and other environmental conditions that could affect future astronauts living and working on Mars.
